How to ask someone to be your Valentine with a link

A will you be my Valentine website is a link with their name on an envelope, the question in big letters, a Yes and a No that slips away every time they try to tap it. You can make one in a few minutes, with no code and no sign-up to start, send it by text and get an email the moment they answer.

The example

How the example starts: An envelope with Emma's name, “Will you be my Valentine?” with a No that keeps running away and, after her yes, a note from James with the plan for the 14th.

What happens when they open the link

The link opens in their phone's browser, with nothing to install. First they see an envelope with their name. When they open it, the question appears with two buttons.

  • Tap Yes and it turns into a small celebration, with your photo if you added one and a short letter signed by you.
  • Try No and it moves out of the way, with a new line each time: “Are you sure?”, “You're making me sad”, “Dinner's on me” and “Last chance.”
  • After a few tries the No gives up and works, with “Okay… I'll ask you again tomorrow.” If they really mean no, they can say it.

That's on purpose. Most yes or no websites make the No impossible to press, which is funny when you both know the answer. With a crush, a no that still works is kinder. Or switch it to serious mode and it works on the first tap.

How to make a will you be my Valentine website without code

  1. Open the example above and tap to use it, or start from scratch and choose “Will you…?” with Valentine's Day.
  2. Write their name and yours. The name goes on the envelope and in the link preview, so the text reads “Emma, I have a question for you.”
  3. Keep “Will you be my Valentine?” or write your own question, like “Will you be my Valentine again this year?”
  4. Add a photo for the Yes and a short letter with the plan: where, when, what to wear. Then publish it and send the link.

You get their answer by email, along with how many times the No ran away before the Yes.

When to ask someone to be your Valentine

If you're asking someone you like, ask a few days before the 14th, not on the day, so you both have time to plan. Send it over text if that's how you two already talk. A link from someone who never texts can feel like a lot.

If you're already together, you don't have to ask, but plenty of couples do because it's fun. The morning of the 14th works for that: the link is the question and the letter is the plan for the night. Asking a crush to be your Valentine does read as “I like you,” so only send it if you mean that.

Asking over text is easier when the question arrives as something they open, not just words in a bubble. Send the link with one short line: the preview already shows their name and “I have a question for you,” and they answer when they're ready instead of on the spot. Asking her or asking him, it works the same way. Some lines to start from:

I made you something. Open it when you have a minute, and be honest.
Tender, for someone you've been talking to for a while.
Before you answer: the No button has a mind of its own. Not my fault.
Funny, for a partner or someone who gets your jokes.
Here's my question for the 14th. No pressure, the answer is all yours.
Low-key, for a first Valentine's or a crush.
I can't hand you flowers from 900 miles away, so I sent the question instead. Open it tonight when you call me.
Long distance: open it together on a video call.

Other ways to ask, and when they work better

  • In person, with something small

A single flower or their favorite candy and the question out loud. If you see them every day, this beats any link.

  • A handwritten card

Slipped into a bag or a book they're reading. It's the one they'll keep in a drawer.

  • A poster or a sign

The school or dorm version. Only do it if you're sure of the answer: a public ask puts the other person on the spot.

  • A video call, if you're far apart

Send the link during the call and watch them chase the No in real time.

  • The link

Best over text, across a distance or when you're too nervous to say it out loud. It also lets them answer on their own time.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes, you can make and send it on the Free plan. A Free gift stays visible for 24 hours after you publish it, so publish it when you're ready to send it. With Pro it never expires.

Can I ask someone to be my Valentine over text?

Yes, and it's one of the easiest ways if you're nervous or far apart. Send the link with a short line like the ones above: they see their name in the preview, open the question when they're ready, and you get an email with their answer.

Can I put their name in the link?

Their name goes on the envelope and in the link preview, so it shows up in the chat before they tap. The link itself is a short code, so nobody can guess it from a name.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. There's nothing to host or deploy: you fill in the names, the question and the letter, and you get a link.

Will I know if they said yes?

Yes. You get an email when they answer, and your account shows whether they said yes, said no or haven't answered yet, and how many times they tried the No first.
